Rivian R2 History

Revealed on March 7, 2024, the R2 is a five-seat midsize SUV and the first vehicle on Rivian's new, lower-cost 'R2' platform, positioned well below the R1 family with a starting price targeted around $45,000. It was announced alongside two smaller crossover concepts, the R3 and the performance R3X, which are slated to follow later.

Rivian offered the R2 with single-, dual-, and tri-motor powertrains and two battery sizes, with the larger pack quoted at over 300 miles of range and the quickest configuration claimed to reach 60 mph in under three seconds. The R2 is central to Rivian's plan to reach higher volume and a broader, more mainstream buyer than the premium R1 line.

Production began at the Normal, Illinois plant in April 2026, with the first customer deliveries following that spring; Rivian guided to delivering on the order of 20,000–25,000 R2s by the end of 2026 as output scaled up.
