Rivian R1S History
History
The R1S was revealed alongside the R1T at the November 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show as the SUV member of Rivian's R1 family. A three-row, up-to-seven-seat full-size SUV, it shares the same skateboard platform and roughly 91% of its components with the R1T pickup, trading the truck's bed for an enclosed cargo area.
Customer deliveries began in 2022, several months after the R1T. Like the truck it offered Launch Edition, Adventure, and (briefly) Explore trims, multiple battery sizes, and dual-, quad-, and later tri-motor powertrains, with adjustable air suspension giving it serious off-road clearance. The R1S quickly became Rivian's best-selling model and a fixture among premium electric SUVs.
It received the same second-generation R1 overhaul as the R1T for the 2025 model year — new in-house drive units, a re-architected electrical system, and updated software — sharpening the SUV without changing its adventure-luxury character.
