The Tempo Matador was launched in 1969 by Firodia Ltd, the predecessor entity that became Bajaj Tempo (and eventually Force Motors). Marketed as India's first diesel-powered light commercial vehicle, the Matador filled a gap between the petrol-driven Viking (1964) and the heavier truck segment, finding wide adoption as a rural goods-carrier and people-mover across India over the following three decades.
Inexpensive, mechanically simple, and capable of carrying both passengers and cargo on poor roads, the Matador accumulated a cult following — it became almost synonymous with rural van transport in several Indian states. Production continued under the Bajaj Tempo banner until the early 2000s, when the model was phased out as BS emission norms and changing market expectations made the ageing platform uncompetitive.
