History

The Ambassador was the senior, most luxurious model in the Rambler range when AMC launched it for 1958 as the 'Ambassador V-8 by Rambler', pitched as a compact-sized luxury-performance car with a 327-cubic-inch V8.

Through the early 1960s it sat above the Classic as Rambler's flagship, sharing much of its body with the intermediate line while offering more length, trim, and standard V8 power. For 1965 the Ambassador was rebranded as the AMC Ambassador — moving off the Rambler badge — so the Rambler-branded Ambassador run covers 1958 through 1964. The nameplate itself continued under AMC until 1974.
