Moon Windsor History

In January 1929 Moon introduced a new car as the 'White Prince of Windsor,' its advertising leaning on imagery of the Prince of Wales and the fleur-de-lis. Buckingham Palace objected to the unauthorized royal association; Moon dropped 'White Prince' to leave just 'Windsor,' keeping the fleur-de-lis on the radiator emblem until it was replaced late in 1929 by a fictitious crest created in-house.

The Windsor was built in St. Louis from 1929 to 1930 by the Windsor Corporation, a Moon subsidiary, and from April 1929 the company built only the Windsor — effectively retiring the Moon name on new cars. It was offered in a range of body styles powered either by an 88-hp straight-eight or a 66-hp six, under the slogan 'America's Smartest Motor Car.'

The Windsor's life was cut short by Moon's disastrous entanglement with New Era Motors and the front-drive Ruxton: the boardroom fight and the Depression ended both Windsor and Ruxton production in 1930, and with them the company itself.
