History
Launched for 1986 alongside the revolutionary Ford Taurus, the Sable shared the Taurus's aerodynamic design but distinguished itself with a signature low-wattage 'lightbar' spanning the front in place of a conventional grille. It became one of Mercury's best-sellers as a mid-size sedan and wagon.
The Sable ran through four generations to 2005, then briefly returned for 2008–2009 as a rebadged, full-size Ford Taurus (replacing the short-lived Montego) before the nameplate was retired as the Mercury brand was wound down.
