Mercury Cyclone History
History
The Cyclone began in 1964 as the performance edition of the Comet, including roughly 50 lightweight, race-prepped 1964 Comet Cyclones built for drag racing. As a stand-alone model from 1968, it offered big-block V8s and, in Cyclone GT and Cyclone Spoiler form, became one of the era's serious muscle cars.
The aerodynamically nosed 1969 Cyclone Spoiler II was built to homologate Mercury's NASCAR effort against the Ford Talladega. As the muscle market faded the Cyclone was folded into the Montego line and dropped after 1972.
