Mercury Cougar History
History
Launched for 1967 on a lengthened version of the Ford Mustang's chassis, the Cougar was Mercury's upscale pony car, with hidden headlamps and sequential turn signals giving it a more sophisticated look than its Ford sibling. The XR-7 trim added a luxury interior, and the 1969–1970 Eliminator served as Mercury's high-performance showcase, including Boss 302 power.
From the 1971–1973 second generation the Cougar drifted away from the pony-car formula toward personal luxury, and by the mid-1970s it was a full personal-luxury coupe — for several generations a near-twin of the Ford Thunderbird, including the aero-styled 1989–1997 MN12 cars.
The nameplate was retired after 1997, then revived for 1999–2002 on a front-wheel-drive platform as a 'New Edge'-styled sport compact hatchback — the only Cougar generation with no Ford divisional counterpart — before production ended in 2002.
