History
The Montego became Mercury's mid-size line for 1968, a more upscale counterpart to the Ford Fairlane/Torino, and absorbed the performance Cyclone before that name was dropped in 1972. The intermediate Montego ran through 1976, after which the line was renamed Cougar.
Mercury revived the Montego name for 2005–2007 on a full-size front- or all-wheel-drive sedan (a sibling of the Ford Five Hundred) before it was renamed the Sable for 2008.
