Mercury Grand Marquis History

The Grand Marquis began as a Marquis trim in the mid-1970s and became a standalone model for 1983, riding the rear-wheel-drive, body-on-frame Ford Panther platform alongside the Ford Crown Victoria. A traditional V8 full-size sedan, it was a favorite of fleet, livery, and older retail buyers and a perennial Mercury best-seller.

From 1988 it was offered only as a four-door sedan, powered by the 4.6-liter modular V8 from the early 1990s. As Ford wound Mercury down, the last Grand Marquis — and the final Mercury-branded vehicle ever built — rolled off the line at St. Thomas Assembly in Ontario, Canada, on January 4, 2011, after 72 model years of Mercury.
