History

Launched on 18 December 1999, the Maruti Wagon R introduced the tall-boy packaging concept to Indian buyers — a short footprint with a high roofline that delivered class-leading headroom, making it accessible for taller passengers and easier to enter and exit. Features like power windows were near-luxuries in a budget car at the time.

The second generation arrived on 23 April 2010, and the third-generation Wagon R was launched on 23 January 2019, riding on the lightweight Heartect platform with a more contemporary exterior and improved safety. Across three generations and roughly 880,000 first-gen units alone, the Wagon R has been one of India's best-selling cars for over two decades.
