Maruti Suzuki Gypsy History

Introduced in December 1985 based on the long-wheelbase Suzuki SJ410 (Jimny) platform, the Maruti Gypsy was India's first mass-produced four-wheel-drive vehicle with a selectable 4WD system. Its 970cc F10A petrol engine and ladder-frame construction made it standard equipment for Indian Army, police, and paramilitary forces.

The Gypsy became an institution in Indian motorsport — it dominated the desert stages of the Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm and similar off-road events for years. Production continued with minimal mechanical change until April 2019, when BS VI emission and crash-safety mandates made updating the decades-old platform unviable.
