History

Launched in 2008 as the Swift Dzire, this three-box sedan paired the Swift's platform and front end with a traditional boot — a format that resonated strongly in India where sedans command a tax and status premium over hatchbacks. The first generation used 1.3-litre petrol and Fiat-sourced diesel engines.

A second generation in 2012 deliberately kept the body under four metres to exploit India's lower excise duty on sub-4-metre cars — a packaging decision that proved commercially decisive. The third generation, launched 16 May 2017, dropped the 'Swift' prefix and made the Dzire a standalone nameplate. A fourth generation followed on 11 November 2024.

The Dzire has been India's best-selling compact sedan for many years, with more than 25 lakh (2.5 million) units sold since launch.
