History

Launched on 8 March 2016 (first shown at Auto Expo 2016) as the Vitara Brezza, this subcompact SUV was the first Suzuki-branded vehicle designed entirely in India by Maruti Suzuki's engineers. It entered a then-nascent sub-four-metre SUV segment and quickly became a dominant force; for its first four years it was diesel-only (Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre DDiS 88hp), a configuration that appealed strongly to value-conscious Indian buyers.

When Maruti exited diesel engines in April 2020 ahead of BS VI regulations, the Vitara Brezza gained a petrol engine and was renamed simply 'Brezza' for its second generation (launched June 2022), which added a mild-hybrid system. By early 2026 cumulative sales had crossed 14 lakh (1.4 million) units, validating the model's dominant position in the compact SUV class.
