History

Introduced on 26 October 2015, the Baleno (unrelated to the 1990s Baleno sedan) is a 5-door premium hatchback built on Suzuki's lightweight HEARTECT platform and sold exclusively through Maruti's premium NEXA retail channel. At launch it offered a 1.2-litre K-series petrol and a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel.

The Baleno was designed and manufactured entirely in India, then exported to markets including Japan — the first car ever made in India to be shipped back to Japan — a milestone for Maruti's engineering capability. A second-generation model arrived in 2022 with a more confident exterior design and a premium interior; the diesel was dropped ahead of BS VI regulations.

With over 2 million units sold globally and consistently ranking among India's top-three best-selling cars in recent years, the Baleno is Maruti's flagship volume hatchback.
