Koenigsegg Regera History

Unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show alongside the Agera RS prototype, the Regera (Swedish: 'to reign' or 'to rule') was Koenigsegg's first hybrid production car and its most road-focused to that point. Production ran from 2016 through approximately 2022, with 80 customer units built — all of which were reportedly allocated before public unveiling.

Its powertrain combined a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 producing approximately 1,100 hp with three electric motors adding roughly 700 hp, for a combined peak output of around 1,500 hp (1,797 hp on some measures). The Regera dispensed with a conventional multi-speed gearbox entirely, instead using a single direct-drive ratio per combustion engine combined with the electric motors' instant torque — a system Koenigsegg called 'Koenigsegg Direct Drive' (KDD). The result was a car that could accelerate from 0 to 400 km/h (249 mph) in under 20 seconds.

Styled as a more comfortable, luxurious Koenigsegg — with conventional door handles and a usable interior — the Regera attracted buyers who wanted performance without the single-minded focus of the Agera RS. It demonstrated that Koenigsegg could execute complex hybrid engineering at bespoke scale.
