Graham-Paige Graham Supercharged Eight History
History
For 1934 Graham introduced a crankshaft-driven centrifugal supercharger, engineered in-house by assistant chief engineer Floyd Kishline, on the Custom Eight — making it the first supercharged car offered at a moderate price in the United States. A lower-priced Special Eight version followed.
The supercharged L-head straight eight gave the Custom Eight strong performance for its class, capable of nearly 90 mph. The straight eight was dropped after 1936, at which point Graham moved the supercharger onto its six-cylinder cars — and over 1934–1941 Graham built more supercharged cars than all other US makers combined.
