History

The Trumpchi GS8 debuted at the April 2016 Beijing Auto Show as the largest vehicle in the Trumpchi lineup at that time, styled by former Mercedes-Benz designer Fan Zhang and powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 198 hp paired with a six-speed automatic. It staked out the upper end of GAC's own-brand range as a spacious, relatively affordable three-row family SUV.

A comprehensively redesigned second generation arrived in 2021 with a longer wheelbase (2,920 mm versus 2,800 mm on the first generation), a more powerful 248-hp 2.0T petrol engine, and — notably — an available Toyota Hybrid System (THS) powertrain, reflecting GAC's technology-sharing relationship with the Japanese brand. A plug-in hybrid ES9 variant followed, producing a combined 373 hp.
