GAC Aion S History
History
The Aion S debuted publicly at Auto Guangzhou in November 2018 as GAC New Energy's first vehicle under the Aion brand, entering pre-sale in March 2019 and going on sale in May 2019. The launch version offered a 184-hp electric motor, a 58.8 kWh battery, and up to 510 km of NEDC-rated range — competitive figures for 2019 in China's rapidly growing EV market.
Successive updates broadened the lineup: the Aion S Plus (2021) refined the styling and offered battery options up to 69.9 kWh with a 610-km range and a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.211 Cd. The Aion S Max (2023) further extended the range and power options. Including rebadged versions supplied to GAC's joint-venture partners (sold as the Toyota iA5 and Honda EA6), the platform reached 221,296 combined units in 2023, establishing it as a genuine volume EV. The Aion S has been particularly popular in commercial fleet and taxi applications across China.
