History
The Aion Y launched in April 2021 as GAC Aion's most affordable and compact model — a small electric hatchback-crossover aimed at urban buyers seeking a practical, entry-priced EV. Despite its modest positioning, it quickly became a volume driver: the Aion Y shipped 34,108 units in 2021, its first year.
The Aion Y Plus variant gained attention in 2021 when GAC demonstrated graphene-enhanced battery technology claiming a charge from 0 to 80% in just 8 minutes, adding 70 kWh — a headline-grabbing fast-charge capability that raised the brand's profile globally. The Aion Y was central to GAC Aion reaching 480,003 vehicles in 2023, making it the third-largest EV brand in the world that year (behind Tesla and BYD).
