Eagle Premier History

The Premier was developed by AMC in partnership with Renault before Chrysler's 1987 takeover, based on the Renault 25 with exterior styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign. It was assembled at the then-new Brampton plant in Ontario, Canada, and used a longitudinal front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout — a Renault hallmark.

Offered as a four-door sedan with a 2.5-liter AMC four or a 3.0-liter PRV V6, the Premier sold well below its target of 260,000 units; approximately 140,000 were sold across the full run (including its Dodge Monaco twin, sold from 1990). Production ended in December 1991.

Its lasting significance is engineering, not sales: the Premier's chassis and packaging directly informed Chrysler's LH platform, which underpinned the Eagle Vision, Chrysler Concorde, and Dodge Intrepid that followed.
