2009Dodge Charger

The nameplate revived as a rear-wheel-drive full-size FOUR-DOOR sedan on the Mercedes-influenced LX platform — controversial with purists who knew the Charger as a coupe. Offered the 5.7 Hemi and the 6.1 Hemi SRT8.

The 2009 model year

Overview

For 2009 Dodge upgraded the Charger R/T's 5.7-liter HEMI with variable valve timing, raising the standard engine to 368 hp and the Road/Track and Daytona calibration to 372 hp. All-wheel-drive SXT and R/T models also gained an active transfer case and automatic front-axle disconnect that removed the front driveline from the power flow when extra traction was unnecessary. The six named factory columns remained SE, SXT, R/T, Road/Track, Daytona and SRT8, with HEMI Orange Pearl identifying the year's Super Bee package.

Year over year

What changed

  • The 5.7-liter HEMI gained variable valve timing; output rose to 368 hp in standard R/T and 372 hp in Road/Track and Daytona.
  • AWD introduced an active transfer case and automatic front-axle disconnect, allowing rear-wheel-drive operation when AWD was not needed.
  • The Super Bee special edition changed to exclusive HEMI Orange Pearl with serialized identification and a reconfigurable performance display.
  • Daytona returned as a late-availability Stone White model with the 372-hp performance HEMI and its own graphics and cabin treatment.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • The 2009 buyer's guide documents nine meaningful retail configurations after separating SXT/R/T drivetrains and the Super Bee package.
  • Standard R/T was rated at 368 hp and 391 lb-ft; Road/Track and Daytona received the 372-hp performance calibration.
  • The SRT8 continued unchanged in core specification at 425 hp and 420 lb-ft with rear-wheel drive and Brembo brakes.
  • The factory Super Bee group bundled HEMI Orange Pearl, special wheels, blackout tape, badging, uconnect tunes, a performance display and serialized dash plaque.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Do not substitute 2008 R/T output or engine-control assumptions: the 2009 5.7-liter is the revised variable-valve-timing HEMI.
  • The automatic-disconnect AWD system differs from the fixed full-time arrangement used in 2007–2008 and adds transfer-case, front-axle, actuator and control-system fitment boundaries.
  • The 3.5-liter SXT uses a four-speed automatic in rear-drive form and a five-speed AutoStick with AWD; drivetrain selection therefore changes transmission-service parts.
  • The owner's manual schedule distinguishes engine-specific spark-plug and timing-belt intervals; maintenance parts must be selected by engine rather than the Charger name alone.
