2008Dodge Charger

The nameplate revived as a rear-wheel-drive full-size FOUR-DOOR sedan on the Mercedes-influenced LX platform — controversial with purists who knew the Charger as a coupe. Offered the 5.7 Hemi and the 6.1 Hemi SRT8.

The 2008 model year

Overview

The 2008 Charger kept the LX sedan's established 2.7-liter V6, 3.5-liter V6, 5.7-liter HEMI and 6.1-liter SRT HEMI ladder while updating the cabin with brighter chrome and satin-silver accents, revised gauges and a more driver-oriented control layout. Dodge's factory order matrix separates SE, SXT, R/T, R/T Road/Track, Daytona and SRT8; AWD remained an option only on SXT and R/T, while the Super Bee returned as a B5 Blue SRT8 package.

Year over year

What changed

  • The cabin gained brighter chrome and satin-silver accents, revised blue/green-lit gauges, and a more driver-oriented instrument-panel layout.
  • MyGIG hard-drive multimedia and navigation systems, Sirius Backseat TV, and expanded UConnect integration were available.
  • The SRT8 Super Bee changed from 2007 Detonator Yellow to a factory-specified B5 Blue Pearl package with numbered identification.
  • The powertrain and drivetrain structure otherwise carried over: AWD was optional on SXT and R/T but absent from SE, Road/Track, Daytona and SRT8 order columns.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • The factory buyer's guide documents nine meaningful retail configurations when SXT and R/T drivetrain choices and the Super Bee package are separated.
  • Road/Track and Daytona used the 350-hp 5.7-liter calibration; the regular R/T remained rated at 340 hp.
  • SRT8 retained the 425-hp 6.1-liter HEMI, rear-wheel drive, Brembo brakes, and lowered high-performance suspension.
  • The B5 Blue Super Bee package required SRT Option Group I and added a performance display, special wheels, blackout treatment, badges and a numbered plaque.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Identify engine, drivetrain and performance package before ordering parts: SE and SXT use different V6 engines and transmissions, while R/T, Road/Track/Daytona and SRT8 use different HEMI calibrations and service hardware.
  • AWD cars add a transfer case, front differential, halfshafts, AWD-specific brakes, severe-duty cooling, a 19-gallon fuel tank, and distinct wheels; RWD fitment does not establish AWD compatibility.
  • The owner's manual maintenance tables assign 30,000-mile spark-plug replacement to the 5.7-liter HEMI, but 102,000 miles to the 2.7-, 3.5- and 6.1-liter engines; the 3.5-liter timing belt is also due at 102,000 miles.
  • The 2.7- and 5.7-liter engines specify SAE 5W-20, while the 3.5- and 6.1-liter engines use different viscosity guidance; verify the engine rather than buying oil solely by model year.
