2006Dodge Charger

The nameplate revived as a rear-wheel-drive full-size FOUR-DOOR sedan on the Mercedes-influenced LX platform — controversial with purists who knew the Charger as a coupe. Offered the 5.7 Hemi and the 6.1 Hemi SRT8.

The 2006 model year

Overview

The Charger returned for 2006 after a two-decade absence as a rear-wheel-drive four-door sedan. Dodge's factory documents divide the launch range into the 250-hp V6 SE and SXT package, the 340-hp R/T, two 350-hp R/T performance packages, the later 425-hp SRT8, and a law-enforcement-only Police package with V6 or optional HEMI power. Daytona R/T was not just a paint choice: it combined the Road/Track chassis and 350-hp calibration with spoilers, black graphics, color-keyed trim, and serialized identification.

Year over year

What changed

  • The Charger nameplate returned as a longitudinal-engine, rear-wheel-drive four-door on the LX architecture.
  • SXT was documented as an option package on SE for this launch year; it retained the same 250-hp 3.5-liter V6.
  • The R/T Road/Track Performance Group and Daytona R/T package raised 5.7-liter output from 340 to 350 hp and added distinct steering, suspension, tire, seat, and damper hardware.
  • Dodge added the 425-hp SRT8 to showrooms in November and separately offered a severe-duty Police model to law-enforcement fleets.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • The factory specification sheet rates the V6 at 250 hp, the standard R/T at 340 hp, and both Road/Track and Daytona R/T at 350 hp.
  • The SRT8 produced 425 hp and 420 lb-ft and added four-piston Brembo brakes, Bilstein dampers, and 20-inch forged wheels.
  • The preliminary feature chart lists Go ManGo! and Top Banana Daytona colors; Dodge announced the later TorRed 2006 Daytona in January 2006.
  • The Police package made the V6 standard and the 340-hp HEMI optional, rather than treating every police Charger as a V8.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Do not order 5.7-liter R/T engine or chassis parts for the 6.1-liter SRT8; the SRT car has different engine internals, brakes, dampers, wheels, and tires.
  • Road/Track and Daytona cars share the 350-hp performance calibration and much of their chassis hardware, but the Daytona adds unique exhaust, exterior, interior, and serialized-identification pieces.
  • Police cars use severe-duty cooling, external engine/transmission/power-steering coolers, fleet electrical provisions, and a column shifter; retail fitment is not enough to establish police-package interchange.
  • The maintenance schedule below is sourced from Dodge's 2006 owner publication and must still be read against engine, duty-cycle, and severe-service applicability.
