History

The Aion S was revealed at Auto Guangzhou in November 2018 as GAC New Energy's first car to carry the Aion name. It went on pre-sale in March 2019 and launched officially in May 2019, making it the brand's founding production vehicle. The initial trims offered a 184 hp (137 kW) permanent-magnet synchronous motor and a 58.8 kWh battery rated at 510 km NEDC range — a figure that undercut rivals in its price bracket considerably.

The nameplate has since expanded into a small family: the Aion S Plus (revealed 2021) brought an updated interior and longer range variants, while the Aion S Max (launched October 2023, ~145,000 CNY) targeted the upper end of the affordable EV sedan segment with a 245 hp motor and a premium cabin. All three variants share the compact-sedan footprint (approximately 4,750 mm length) and remain in production.
