Wuling Sunshine History
History
Launched at the joint venture's founding in 2002, the Wuling Sunshine (internally called Zhiguang) was a compact, front-engine microvan designed for China's mass market: affordable, practical, and capable of carrying seven or eight passengers across both urban and rural terrain.
Its sales trajectory was remarkable. In 2011, SAIC-GM-Wuling built 943,000 Sunshines, making it the third best-selling vehicle on the planet that year. It held the title of China's single best-selling vehicle in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 — an unmatched run for any model in that market.
The Sunshine's first-generation production ran 2002 to 2013, with updated variants (Sunshine S, Sunshine V) carrying the platform into the 2020s. A fully electric Zhiguang EV successor was announced for 2025, closing the loop from the combustion microvan era to the EV era under the same Wuling badge.
