History
The TR7 marked a radical break: a Harris Mann-designed wedge with a fixed roof, monocoque construction, and a 2.0-litre four, advertised as 'the shape of things to come'. Launched in the US in January 1975 (UK 1976), it was conceived as a coupe partly in anticipation of proposed American rollover rules that, in the end, never arrived.
A drophead convertible — styled with Michelotti input — joined in 1979. Built variously at Speke, Canley, and Solihull amid British Leyland's industrial turmoil, the TR7 had a troubled reputation, but with roughly 112,000 hardtops and 28,000 convertibles it was the volume seller of the TR line and its last mass-produced chapter.
