Triumph TR4 History
History
The TR4 (1961) re-bodied the rugged TR mechanicals with modern, square-cut styling by Giovanni Michelotti, adding wind-up windows and a wider track. It also offered the innovative 'Surrey top' — a lift-out hard panel over a fixed rear screen, an early take on the targa idea.
The TR4A (1965) brought independent rear suspension to most markets, smoothing the ride. The line bridged the old wet-liner four and the coming six-cylinder TR5/TR6, keeping Triumph competitive in the booming US sports-car market.
