Launched in October 1963 — a week after the rival Rover P6 2000 — the Triumph 2000 was a monocoque, all-independent-suspension compact executive saloon styled by Michelotti, using a 2.0-litre straight-six derived from the Standard Vanguard. The two cars defined a new class of refined, modern middle-management saloons.
From 1968 came larger-engined cars: the 2.5 PI (petrol injection) used Lucas mechanical fuel injection, and the carburettor 2500 followed. The injected cars (like the related TR6) gained a reputation for fuel-system unreliability. The Mk 2 — the last big Triumph saloon — ran until 1977, when British Leyland's Rover SD1 took over the executive role.
