Tofaş Tipo / Egea History

Fiat and Tofaş invested a combined €1.5 billion in the development and Bursa production tooling for the second-generation Fiat Tipo, which rolled off the line in October 2015. In Turkey it was marketed as the Fiat Egea — a name derived from the Aegean Sea — while international markets retained the Tipo badge. The sedan body style arrived first, followed by hatchback, station wagon, and later an elevated Cross variant.

The Tipo/Egea immediately became a phenomenon in Turkey: it was the country's best-selling car every year from 2016 through 2024, a nine-consecutive-year streak that no competing model came close to matching. Globally, Tofaş exported the Tipo to more than 50 countries, and it became the plant's highest-volume production programme.

The model's production contract at Tofaş, initially set to expire at the end of 2025, was extended to 30 June 2026 on sustained demand, after which a Stellantis-sourced replacement model was contracted to enter production at Bursa in the third quarter of 2026. The Tipo/Egea programme represented the apex of Tofaş's evolution from a licensed assembler of Fiat classics to a co-developer and world-scale exporter.
