History
Tofaş assembled the first-generation Fiat Tipo hatchback (internal code Type 160) at its Bursa plant from 1993 alongside the Tempra, offering Turkish buyers the award-winning five-door hatchback that had taken the European Car of the Year title in 1989. The Tipo was priced above the Bird Series but below the larger Tempra, covering the mainstream compact hatchback segment.
Turkish production of the Type 160 Tipo ran into the early 2000s (sources vary; roughly 2000–2002), after which Tofaş shifted its compact hatchback focus to newer Fiat-platform vehicles including the Palio and the Albea. The Tipo name would return to the Bursa plant with great success more than a decade later.
