SEAT's best-selling compact hatchback and the home of Cupra performance — four generations on VW Group platforms, with over two million sold.

History
Launched in October 1999 on the Volkswagen Group PQ34 platform (shared with the Golf Mk4 and Audi TT), the first-generation León introduced SEAT as a genuine driver's-brand compact, available with the sharp Cupra and Cupra R performance variants. The Cupra 4 brought four-wheel drive to SEAT's compact for the first time.
The second generation (from 2005, on PQ35/A5 architecture) expanded the range with a three-door SC body and saw the León Cupra become one of Europe's most affordable hot hatches. The third generation, debuted at the 2012 Paris Motor Show on the new MQB platform, added an estate bodystyle (León ST) and elevated build quality substantially, with Cupra variants reaching 280 hp.
The fourth and current generation arrived in 2020 on MQB Evo, sharing its bones with the Golf Mk8 and Skoda Octavia Mk4. The VW Group subsequently transferred SEAT's performance output to the standalone Cupra brand, meaning post-2021 León performance variants are badged Cupra León rather than SEAT León. More than two million Leóns have been produced at Martorell.
