History
Launched in 1987, the Scania 3-series replaced the 2-series and raised the bar for European heavy trucks in both aerodynamics and outright power. Its cab-over-engine layout was progressively refined, and in 1991 the Streamline variant arrived with detail aerodynamic improvements that measurably cut fuel consumption.
The range-topping R143 Streamline — powered by a 500 hp evolution of the 14-litre V8 — is widely regarded as one of the most significant European tractor units of its era, combining reliability with the highest power output available in a production truck. It became a benchmark against which rivals were measured.
European production of the 3-series ended in 1995 when the 4-series was unveiled, with final build-out continuing to approximately 1998. The 3-series remains a collectors' icon, particularly the Topline R143.
