SAIC Motor Shanghai SH760 History

The Shanghai SH760 entered production in December 1964 at the Shanghai city factory, derived from a modified Phoenix prototype whose design drew loosely on the Mercedes-Benz 220S (W180) with additional American-influenced front and rear styling. It became the standard transport for government officials not senior enough to command the FAW Hongqi limousine.

Production was modest — roughly 5,000 units per year at peak capacity — with a cumulative total of approximately 49,000 units built before the line ended around 1989–1991 as China's market opened to joint-venture cars. A mildly updated SH760B variant appeared in 1988. The SH760 factory later became the nucleus of SAIC.
