History

Announced at the 2016 Guangzhou Auto Show, the MG ZS entered production in 2017 as the brand's second SUV (after the MG GS) and its first genuinely global volume model. Launched in the United Kingdom in November 2017, it offered competitive packaging and aggressive pricing that quickly gained traction in a class dominated by Nissan and Honda. A battery-electric variant, the ZS EV, arrived in 2018, giving MG one of the first affordable electric compact SUVs on the European market.

The ZS became the cornerstone of SAIC's international expansion: by 2019 MG Motor was the single largest-volume car exporter from China, with the ZS driving the majority of those sales across Europe, Australia, the Middle East, and Latin America. A substantially refreshed second-generation ZS arrived in 2022.
