Proton Wira History
History
Launched on 21 May 1993, the Wira was Proton's step up from the Saga, based on the CB-platform fourth-generation Mitsubishi Lancer with revised styling (Proton-designed front end, bonnet, and tail lights). It arrived first as a four-door saloon, followed in October 1993 by the five-door 'Aeroback' hatchback.
By 1996 the Wira was offered with six engine options, all sourced from Mitsubishi: the 4G13 (1.3L), 4G15 (1.5L), 4G92 (1.6L), 4G93 SOHC and DOHC (1.8L), and a 4D68 2.0L diesel. The sporty Satria GTi — engineered with input from Proton's Lotus subsidiary — derived from the Wira's platform. A 2004 facelift updated the front fascia, and a 'WiSE' special edition added sporty interior and exterior touches.
The last Wiras were produced in June 2009, by which time the nameplate had accumulated over 952,000 units — making it one of the most important models in Malaysian automotive history.
