History

The Cayman arrived for 2006 (on sale late 2005) as a fixed-roof version of the 987 Boxster, but with a stiffer structure and subtly different rear proportions. Immediately praised for its handling purity, the Cayman was said by some critics to be a better driver's car than the contemporary 911 — a perception Porsche navigated carefully by keeping the Cayman's power below the base 911's.

Like the Boxster, the Cayman moved to the 718 designation for 2017 with turbocharged flat-fours, then received the GTS 4.0 and GT4 models featuring naturally aspirated flat-sixes for the 718 generation. The GT4 RS, introduced in 2022 with 500 hp and the 911 GT3's engine, is the most extreme Cayman to date. Production of the 718 Cayman ended in October 2025.
