History
Introduced in 1982, the 944 replaced the 924's Audi-sourced engine with a Porsche-designed 2.5-litre inline-four — effectively half of the 928's V8 — producing 163 hp and offering a genuine performance step up. Wider bodywork, a stiffer structure, and better weight balance gave the 944 credibility the 924 never quite earned.
A turbocharged 944 Turbo (951) arrived in 1985 producing 220 hp, and a full Cabriolet body style was added. With over 163,000 units built across all variants, the 944 became the most commercially successful Porsche sports car until the Boxster era. It was replaced by the 968 in 1991.
