History
Launched for 1978, the 928 was Porsche's most ambitious and expensive production car of its era — a front-engine, rear-transaxle grand tourer powered by a V8 and designed to be quieter, more comfortable, and more refined than the 911 while still being fast. The management intended it to gradually take over from the 911, but buyer demand for the 911 never wavered, so both continued in parallel.
The 928 evolved significantly through its production run, growing from 4.5 litres and 240 hp to a 5.4-litre 350-hp GTS by its final years. It won Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1978. Despite critical acclaim, production ended in 1995 as the 928 could not justify its costs in Porsche's leaner post-1991 financial recovery; only about 61,000 were built.
