History

The 968 arrived for 1992 as the culmination of the 924/944 platform — so extensively revised (Porsche said 80 percent of components were new or significantly changed) that it warranted a new name. The 3.0-litre inline-four produced 236 hp, with VarioCam variable valve timing for efficiency and a broad power band, and the slick styling cues previewed the 993-generation 911.

Although sold in small numbers — fewer than 13,000 built — the 968 earned high praise for its balanced handling and driver engagement, particularly in Club Sport and CS forms. Both the 968 and 928 GTS were dropped in 1995 as Porsche streamlined its lineup around the 911 and the incoming Boxster.
