Mini Hatch / Hardtop History
The BMW-era Mini's core model — the Cooper three-door (and later five-door) hatch that relaunched the marque in 2001, sold as the 'Hardtop' in the US.

History
When BMW relaunched Mini for 2001, this retro-styled premium hatchback — the Mini Hatch in Britain, the Mini Hardtop in the US — was the car that carried the whole marque. Bigger and far more sophisticated than the 1959 original it evoked, it paired go-kart handling with a fashion-led, heavily personalisable image.
The first generation (R50/R53) ran from 2001 to 2006 with a supercharged Cooper S on top; the second generation (R56) followed for 2007–2013 and switched the S to a turbocharged 'Prince' engine while adding the factory John Cooper Works model. The third generation (F56) arrived for 2014 on BMW's UKL platform, introducing a longer five-door body for the first time.
A fourth generation launched from 2024, when the petrol three-door took the model code F66 and the line was renamed simply 'Cooper'; a dedicated battery-electric version (J01) was developed alongside it.

Second generation (R56) · R56
A reworked Mini that switched the Cooper S to a turbocharged engine and added the factory John Cooper Works model.

Moved to BMW's UKL platform and added a five-door hatch (F55) and the limited JCW GP.

Mini's factory-hot-hatch flagship, named for the classic Cooper tuner; the most powerful Cooper variant.
John Cooper Works GP
Limited-run, hardcore track-focused Minis; the 2020 (F56) GP made 306 hp and was capped at 3,000 units.
Cooper SE (electric)
The first fully electric production Mini hatch, based on the F56 three-door; a dedicated electric Cooper followed with the 2024 generation.
