The 1980 model year

Overview

The 1980 U.S. W116 range closed with the 280 SE, 300 SD, and 450 SEL; the 450 SEL 6.9 was no longer in the model-year roster. Mercedes-Benz presented the successor W126 in September 1979, then ended individual W116 variants between April and September 1980, with a 300 SD recorded as the final one of 473,035 W116 sedans built globally.

Year over year

What changed

  • This was the final W116 model year before the U.S. W126 range arrived for 1981.
  • The U.S. roster narrowed to three models after the 450 SEL 6.9's departure.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • The 473,035 figure is total global W116 production across the full series, not 1980-only output.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Confirm the data plate, engine, wheelbase, and market specification before ordering parts; global W116 chronology and the U.S. model-year roster are not interchangeable.
  • Inspect the fuel, brake, cooling, suspension, and corrosion-prone structural areas as complete systems; age and prior restoration now matter more than a generic model reputation.
