The 1979 model year

Overview

For 1979, the U.S. S-Class range added the 300 SD turbodiesel to the 280 SE, 450 SEL, and 450 SEL 6.9. Mercedes-Benz developed the turbocharged five-cylinder diesel specifically for the United States and Canada as a way to lower corporate-average fuel consumption, making it the first diesel-powered model in this vehicle category.

Year over year

What changed

  • The 3.0-liter OM617 turbocharged-diesel 300 SD entered the U.S. model-year roster.
  • The four-model range spanned six-cylinder gasoline, diesel, regular V8, and 6.9-liter flagship configurations.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • The 300 SD was a North America-only W116 derivative in Mercedes-Benz's factory chronology.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Confirm the data plate, engine, wheelbase, and market specification before ordering parts; global W116 chronology and the U.S. model-year roster are not interchangeable.
  • Inspect the fuel, brake, cooling, suspension, and corrosion-prone structural areas as complete systems; age and prior restoration now matter more than a generic model reputation.
