Mahindra Scorpio History
History
The Scorpio launched on 20 June 2002 as the first vehicle that Mahindra developed entirely in-house from the ground up, rather than adapting a licensed design. Development took five years and cost roughly ₹600 crore — a major strategic bet. The original truck-derived platform carried a 2.6-litre diesel, and the Scorpio's rugged, upright styling and competitive price immediately resonated; it became an aspirational SUV in a market where most alternatives were far more expensive.
The nameplate accumulated iterative facelifts in 2006, 2009, and 2014 while staying on its original platform, a testament to how well the formula worked. By the time it was revised for a 2022-generation overhaul, it had spent years as one of India's best-loved SUVs.
On 27 June 2022 Mahindra launched the all-new Scorpio-N as the next generation, underpinned by a new ladder-frame platform and sharing architecture with the XUV700. The original body-on-frame design continued in parallel as the 'Scorpio Classic', ensuring continuity for loyal buyers. The Scorpio-N crossed 100,000 units of production in February 2024.
