History

The Bolero launched in 2000 (some sources note 2001 for the full market rollout) as a rugged, affordable body-on-frame SUV designed for India's varied terrain and price-sensitive buyers. It slotted below the Scorpio in the Mahindra lineup but outsold it handily in volume, becoming the best-selling SUV in India for nine consecutive years through 2015 and crossing 100,000 annual units for four straight years.

The Bolero's longevity is built on straightforward, easy-to-repair mechanicals and a price point accessible outside the major metros. Mahindra has refreshed the formula — with updates in 2007, 2009, and 2011 — rather than replacing it outright, recognising that its core buyers prioritise reliability and economy over style. A next-generation Bolero on a new platform is in development as of 2026.
