Introduced in 1976, the Gamma was Lancia's new flagship to replace the Flaminia, sitting above the Beta and positioned against the Citroën CX and Rover SD1. Its 2.0- and 2.5-litre flat-four engines — a configuration unusual in a large luxury car — aimed for compactness and low bonnet height. A Pininfarina-styled coupé offered a more elegant alternative to the saloon.
Despite its engineering interest, the Gamma sold in modest numbers and was withdrawn in 1984 after approximately 22,084 saloons and 6,789 coupés were built. Reliability concerns and limited market penetration ended the nameplate before it could establish itself as a benchmark.
