Introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963, the Fulvia (Tipo 818) was named after the Roman road Via Fulvia from Tortona to Turin. It was a compact front-wheel-drive saloon powered by a narrow-angle V4 engine — an unusual configuration that gave it a performance edge in rally competition.
The Fulvia Coupé, launched in 1965, became the rally weapon. HF variants with progressively larger V4 engines — culminating in the 1.6 HF Fanalone with up to 132 hp — dominated international rallying and delivered Lancia the International Championship for Makes in 1972. The Fulvia was superseded in competition by the Stratos from 1974 and production of all variants ended in 1976.
