Hummer H1 History

The H1 was a civilianized version of AM General's M998 HMMWV — the military 'Humvee' that became famous in the 1991 Gulf War. AM General began selling it to the public in 1992 under the new 'Hummer' brand name; Arnold Schwarzenegger, who lobbied to buy one of the first, became the model's most visible early owner.

Built around the same wide-track, portal-axle architecture as the military truck, the H1 prioritized extreme off-road capability over comfort — exceptional ground clearance, a low center of gravity, and run-flat-capable tires, but a cramped cabin straddling a huge transmission tunnel. It was offered with a series of GM diesel V8s (6.2L, 6.5L, turbo 6.5L) and a 5.7L gasoline V8.

General Motors bought the Hummer brand name from AM General in December 1999, though AM General continued to build the H1. The line ended after a re-engineered final variant, the H1 Alpha (2006), which fitted the 6.6L Duramax turbodiesel V8 and an Allison five-speed automatic; just 729 Alphas were built before tightening emissions rules ended production in June 2006. Total H1 output was about 11,818 units.
