HSV ClubSport History
History
Introduced in June 1990 on the VN Commodore platform, the ClubSport was HSV's accessible performance sedan — a V8-powered Commodore with upgraded suspension, brakes, and body kits. It was priced below the flagship GTS to maximise volume, and across 27 years it became the marque's best-seller by a wide margin.
Through the VN, VP, VR, VS, VT, VX, VY, VZ, VE, and VF generations the ClubSport mirrored every Commodore platform change, always pairing the current Holden or GM V8 (from the 5.0-litre Holden unit to the LS1, LS2, and finally the LS3) with firmer suspension, bigger brakes, and full body kit. Output grew from 180 kW in 1990 to 317 kW (ClubSport R8) by the VF generation.
The VF-based ClubSport R8 of 2013–2017 was the final evolution, producing 325 kW from the LS3 in R8 specification. Production ended in 2017 when Holden closed its Australian manufacturing operations, marking the end of 27 continuous years of the most important nameplate in HSV history.
