GMC Sonoma History

GMC's compact pickup launched for the 1982 model year as the GMC S-15, the upmarket counterpart to the Chevrolet S-10. The nameplate was changed to Sonoma starting in 1991, the same year the truck spawned the turbocharged all-wheel-drive Syclone.

Two generations ran — the original (1982–1993) and a redesign (1994–2004) — sold as the high-value alternative to imported compact trucks. By its final 2004 model year only the crew cab remained; the Sonoma was replaced for 2005 by the larger mid-size Canyon.
